Mastitis: How Physiotherapy Can Effectively Treat it

How physiotherapy can help with Mastitis

Mastitis is an uncomfortable and often painful condition experienced by many breastfeeding mothers. It occurs when a milk duct becomes blocked, which leads to inflammation and in some cases, infection. What many people don’t know is, physiotherapy offers highly effective, non-invasive treatments that can relieve symptoms, promote healing and allow you to continue your breastfeeding journey.

At Invigorate Health and Performance, we believe that understanding the tools available for managing mastitis is key to finding relief. So… Let’s explore how physiotherapy can help you.

1. Therapeutic Ultrasound

One of the most effective ways we can treat mastitis is through the use of ultrasound. This technique involves using a machine that when applied to the skin sends sound waves to penetrate deep into the affected breast tissue, promoting circulation and helping to break down the blockers in the milk ducts. This is a pain free experience! All you feel is a little pressure and warmth.

How it works:

  • Ultrasound increases blood flow to the inflamed area, reducing swelling and encouraging natural drainage of the blocked duct.
  • It also helps soften the hardened areas. This makes it easier for milk to flow and prevents the condition from worsening.
  • Sessions are typically short, painless, and provide immediate relief for many women.

Therapeutic ultrasound is a safe and non-invasive, and combined with other treatments, it can significantly speed up recovery.

2. Breast Massage

Manual therapy, particularly massage, is another excellent tool for treating mastitis. Gentle massage can help to relieve pain and encourage the flow of milk, clearing blockages in the ducts.

How we approach it:

  • Our physiotherapists use gentle, circular motions over the affected area to promote lymphatic drainage and milk flow.
  • We focus on reducing the pressure buildup and inflammation that accompany mastitis.
  • The massage is often combined with heat therapy to soften the ducts and improve comfort during and after treatment.

Breast massage is a gentle, hands-on approach that complements other forms of treatment, making it easier for you to continue breastfeeding without discomfort.

3. Taping to Relieve Pressure and Improve Posture

Kinesiology taping, a technique often used in sports rehabilitation, can also be applied to relieve the pressure caused by mastitis. However when we are managing mastitis, we use the kinesiology tape to improve your lymphatic drainage by applying tape which encourages drainage towards the armpit.

How taping helps:

  • Taping lifts the skin and creates space for better lymphatic flow and milk drainage.
  • It provides gentle support to the breasts, reducing pressure on the inflamed areas.

Kinesiology taping is a safe and effective way to reduce pressure and inflammation, particularly when used in conjunction with massage and ultrasound treatments.

4. Education and Self-Care for Long-Term Management

While ultrasound, massage, and taping are effective in treating mastitis, education is a crucial component of long-term care. At Invigorate Health and Performance, we empower mothers with the knowledge they need to manage symptoms and prevent future flare-ups.

Our educational approach includes:

  • Breastfeeding techniques: We’ll guide you through positions and practices that promote optimal milk flow, helping you avoid blockages.
  • Self-massage techniques: Learning how to safely perform breast massage at home can keep ducts clear and reduce the risk of mastitis returning.
  • Postural awareness: We’ll provide tips on maintaining good posture while breastfeeding, reducing tension in your upper body.
  • Hydration and nutrition tips: Staying hydrated and maintaining a balanced diet can support your body’s natural milk production and immune system, reducing the likelihood of blockages.

By arming you with the tools and knowledge you need, we help reduce the chances of recurrent mastitis and ensure a smoother breastfeeding journey for you and your baby.
